With attendance of between 150 and 300 people per month at its Johannesburg and Cape Town events, Mobile Monday (MOMO) is expanding its operations to include Durban.

Mobile Monday is a non-profit organisation established to foster innovation in the mobile sector by hosting monthly meet-ups that facilitate between individuals and companies operating in the mobile space. Each meet-up is sponsored by a different organisation, including mobile platforms (like Samsung), providers (such as 8ta) and agencies (such as InMobi).

The first Mobile Monday was hosted in 2000 in Finland, and the idea has since spread across the globe. MOMO South Africa was founded in 2008 by a committee that came together from different professional backgrounds to volunteer their time and efforts.

“Simply put, Mobile Monday provides a non-biased, agnostic, open and non-pressurised, free platform to encourage people with great ideas to act on those ideas and with like-minded passionate people from large, medium and small organisations,” explains MOMO SA chairman Richard Walton.

Some of the MOMO South Africa meet-ups so far have included app-pitching contests, presentations by analysts of the latest local mobile statistics, and debates about enterprise best-practice. Attendance is always free.

The Durban chapter has its first meet-up tonight at 6pm at Remo's Fratelli, Flanders Mall, Mount Edgecombe. It is sponsored by InMobi and will feature a panel discussion between Jacqui Boyd (InMobi), Dylan Cherry (Mr Price), Marc Forrest and Shaun Trennery (SAFINDit).
