Mobile spyware blog entry

Johannesburg, 08 Dec 2006

FYI, McAfee AVERT Labs has received the first samples of spyware targeting mobile phones - which can record all incoming and outgoing SMS messages and keep a record of all dialled and received calls.

MultiDropper.CG is the first piece of malware to contain the mobile spyware SymbOS/Mobispy.

Rather than creating the spyware software from scratch, the author of MultiDropper.CG has taken a piece of commercial software called Flexispy and integrated it into their malware - just eight months after it was commercially launched.

Key points to note are:

* MultiDropper.CG is a Symbian-based Trojan targeting Nokia Series 60 devices.
* Is in the MultiDropper family which are collections of popular malware.
* MultiDropper.CG is the first in the series to include spyware SymbOS/Mobispy.A.
* Infection via MMS, e-mail, Bluetooth, Irda, MemoryCard and requires user confirmation.

Like most mobile threats, MultiDropper.CG is a proof of concept and unlikely to cause widespread spyware infections among mobile phones.

However, considering that data stealing and other for-profit malware have made their entrance on mobile phones, it is worrying to see spyware make its debut.
