Modest IT training growth expected

Johannesburg, 15 Dec 2004

Demand for client site instructor-led training (ILT) increased in the past year in SA, according to the second annual regional survey of the IT training industry by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).

The survey also found there was an increase in blended learning, or where Internet-delivered learning was combined with ILT. However, Internet‑only training declined and public scheduled ILT was static.

The survey says the local IT training market saw steady, but not spectacular growth in 2004. Training providers expect a similar pattern in 2005, although stronger performance is expected in most areas of e-learning.

Wide variation is expected again between market sectors, with further decline in transport and retail, but expansion in IT, telecoms and government.

Subject areas achieving strong growth in 2004 were security, project management, business skills, desktop applications and Microsoft Office.

The same areas are expected to perform strongly next year, along with certification training.
