Monitor market reflects growth, opportunity

Johannesburg, 08 May 2006

The local monitor market is bullish. Advancements within gaming and other multi-application, multimedia environments have helped to channel the benefits of development in display technology through to the consumer.

And the response from many areas of the market has been strong and consistent.

Gaming and digital lifestyle enthusiasts have done much for the development of the monitor. They have contributed towards the establishment of thin, lightweight and flat screen technology, encouraged the integration of peripherals and components and contributed towards more affordable technology in general.

Gamers require higher performance from technology in order to simulate reality. Their consistent call for higher capacity memory, high resolution, better contrast, wider viewing angles, to mention but a few, has steered the market towards the convergence of monitor and TV technology. This is an emerging trend that looks set to continue.

Digital enthusiasts describe plasma technology as a major plus within television screens.

In their effort to meet the demand, manufacturers are paying more attention towards fundamental architectural aspects such as response time, resolution, viewing angles, aesthetics, ergonomic value, price and, of course, quality of images.

They are also mindful of the increase in popularity of liquid crystal display (LCD) over CRT or cathode ray tubes. This is also due, in part, to the proliferation of mobile and wireless technology and practicality of LCD within this environment. Pricing has also improved due to demand and development and this can only benefit the consumer.
