Montecasino, the complex owned by Tsogo Sun Gaming & Entertainment, has awarded Learning Resources a two-year contract for the provision of an e-learning programme for its 1 100 employees.
The solution from Learning Resources is deployed over the Montecasino intranet and gives end-users access to modules covering subjects such as basic PC literacy as well as Microsoft applications like Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Montecasino is also offering employees PLATO computer-based adult basic education training.
Says David Moitse, HRD practitioner at Montecasino: "As a black empowerment company which has the objective of acting as a vehicle for the advancement of people from disadvantaged backgrounds, Tsogo Sun places a great deal of emphasis on learning and development programmes for all employees. Happy and well skilled employees also help us to deliver better service to our customers.
"We offer many soft skills and gaming industry-specific training programmes, but recognise that computer literacy forms an important component of many of our job functions. Access to the courses is open to all employees who are interested in personal development and career advancement."
Montecasino previously worked with Learning Resources on computer literacy programmes at its temporary facility which operated from the Northgate Dome, and decided to revive the initiative now it has settled in its new location in Fourways.
Moitse says that Montecasino opted for an e-learning solution in favour of classroom-based training because it gives employees the flexibility to learn at their own pace and at the most convenient times. Employees on evening and early morning shifts can now make productive use of the time they spend waiting for transport or for their shifts to start, he says.
"We`ve found that external classroom-based training is expensive and that employees often return without the skills and knowledge they were meant to acquire. E-learning, in contrast, allows us to track the progress of our employees, intervene if they need help, and tie computer literacy training to general performance plans and appraisals," Moitse adds.
The course is aligned with standards set out in the National Qualifications Framework, and users who successfully complete courses receive nationally recognised certificates. Pre-assessment and post-assessment tests allow Montecasino to measure an employee`s skills before and after he or she has completed a course, and to ensure that workers don`t waste time learning what they already know.
The Montecasino e-learning programme is based on the NETg products and training framework, represented in SA by Learning Resources. Moitse says NETg`s e-learning modules are easy to use and give Montecasino and its employees a flexible learning system.
Janine Appelgryn, account consultant at Learning Resources, says her company works with an organisation to determine its business objectives, and then formulates a NETg learning system comprising content, architecture, and services.
"Working with NETg products allows us to supply a complete learning system that provides personalised and interactive content for each customer," she says.
