Telkom has appointed acting executive of IT solutions Sammy Gumbe to take up the position in a full-time capacity.
Gumbe took the acting position at the beginning of last month, when Bashier Sallie was promoted to executive for information operations. Bashier's appointment marked the company's focus shift to the wholesale market.
Gumbe, who has been with Telkom for 17 years, will take up the position immediately. “Sammy has held various senior management positions in IT and HR. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the ICT industry to the portfolio,” says Sallie.
Telkom has been quietly shuffling its executive teams over the last few months, building up its newly-created business structure. This sees three new business units: Telkom SA, headed by industry veteran Pinky Moholi; Telkom Data Centres, which has acting head Pierre Marais; and Telkom International.
The international business unit should have telecoms turnaround man and former Cell C CEO Jeffery Hedberg as its head. However, the majority owner of Cell C, Saudi Oger, is keeping Hedberg from taking up his position by holding him to an employment agreement.
