Cell C has recorded 3.2 million subscribers as at December 2005. This is an 18.5% increase from the 2.7 million recorded at the end of September 2005.
The number of postpaid subscribers increased to approximately 670 000, while the number of prepaid subscribers increased to 2.53 million.
Vanashree Pillay, Cell C`s new executive head of corporate communications, says the numbers meet the company`s expectations. However, she would not comment further, as Cell C will officially release the full subscriber numbers in March.
The third mobile operator has rolled out over 2 000 base stations on its own network, allowing it to carry over 80% of its traffic.
Earlier this week, Vodacom announced it had recorded 21.5 million subscribers across all its networks in Africa as at December 2005. Vodacom South Africa`s subscriber base increased to 17.6 million during this period, with 2.3 million contract customers and 15.3 million prepaid customers.
