Motorola gears up for 'lapdock' devices

The Mobile Indian.

The Motorola Atrix is the first smartphone to come with an accessory-like laptop dock that turns the device into a netbook.

“You will see multiple devices from us in the second half [of this year], and we will expand the range of our lap-dock devices so that we cover a broader price-point; addressing both enterprise tiers as well as more consumer tiers,” says Sanjay Jha, Motorola's CEO.

Mobiledia says the Atrix concept, in which a smartphone slots into a netbook-like dock, provides high computing power and takes advantage of the dock's larger screen and keyboard.

Atrix was greeted with excitement when it was unveiled in January. But it subsequently failed to storm the market, probably owing to the relatively high cost of the dock accessory and sluggish performance compared to most netbooks and tablets.

Top News reveals that Motorola's plan is to embed a quad-core processor into the Atrix device when docked to boost performance.

Meanwhile, Motorola says it has shipped 9.3 million mobile devices during the first quarter of 2011. Revenue jumped from $2.48 billion to $3 billion, representing an increase of 22% from the corresponding period last year.

Operating loss slipped from $172 million to $36 million, while gross margin for the first quarter was reported at $755 million, up from $595 million a year ago.
