Motorola honoured by Interpol

Johannesburg, 06 Jan 2004

Interpol, the international law enforcement agency, has honoured communications company Motorola for the organisation`s services to the law enforcement community.

The inaugural Interpol Outstanding Contribution Award was presented to Mike Worthington, Motorola corporate VP and GM for Safety and Solutions, at Interpol`s 72nd general assembly held in Benidorm, Spain.

"Motorola has a 65-year history of providing innovative communication solutions for law enforcement organisations around the world, so this award is certainly an honour," says Worthington.

"Motorola staff are highly motivated to respond to the challenge of events that can place extreme demands on law enforcement officers, especially in times of crisis or natural ."

Chief Joseph Samuels Jr, president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, says the award recognises Motorola for being an "outstanding partner of law enforcement around the world".

One recent example he cites where the company provided important support was the supply of radios and infrastructure to help inter-agency communications between the public safety services that were dealing with the aftermath of the 11 September terrorist attacks.

Other recent cases include the installation of a digital communication network and deployment of radios within 48 hours for the emergency services dealing with the massive floods in Germany and Hungary in 2002, communication hardware and resources at critical health checkpoints in China to help combat the spread of the SARS virus, and the strategic deployment of field engineering to maintain critical public safety systems in the US during Hurricane Isabel.

Worthington says that with the increasing worldwide attention on safety and security issues that cross jurisdictions and borders, there is a need for companies to provide interoperable communications solutions.

"Motorola has teams that are equipped to both anticipate and respond to emergency situations, working with clients to enable their systems to remain fully operational in the event of power outages, natural disasters and other emergencies," he says.
