Motorola offers new wave in cellular technology

Johannesburg, 29 Sep 1999

Motorola has released three new consumer-oriented personal communications solutions: the Timeport, Talkabout and the V series. The company`s main target consumer groups are time managers, personal connectors and young trendsetters.

The Timeport category is aimed at meeting the needs of the "time manager", and will offer multi-task communication and time-management capabilities. The first phone in this product range is the tri-band phone, the Timeport L7089. Next in line will be the Timeport P7389 phone, equipped with Mobile Media Mode to allow access to the where available.

The V series is Motorola`s offering to trendy young things, which aims at turning personal communication products into fashion accessories. The V.3688 will be introduced soon, in two colours - Titanium and Radar Blue.

The Talkabout segment focuses on keeping family and friends in touch - at the touch of a button. The Talkabout TA288 walkie-talkie is marketed as the ideal solution for one-to-many communication.

The primary focus of Motorola`s new solutions is convergence of technologies, bringing the Internet to technology users. Motorola`s chairman and MD for Southern Africa, Dave Reddy, cites the anticipated increase in convergence over the next five years as the driving force behind Motorola`s aim to go "to wireless and beyond".

According to Reddy, Motorola has entered into agreements with Cisco Systems and Sun Microsystems whereby the latter companies will respectively contribute the backbone and applications for a new network supporting the wireless service, which Motorola aims to establish in the not too distant future.
