Motorola opens door to wireless Internet commerce

Announces Tri-Band WAP phone which can read third party smart cards
Johannesburg, 18 Nov 1999

Motorola Inc today announced its first WAP enabled global e-commerce phone. By combining globetrotting capability, Internet access and mobile commerce, the Motorola Timeport P7389e phone makes purchasing on the move a reality, in many locations around the world.

The GSM tri-band Motorola Timeport P7389e phone can read two smart cards - a SIM card and third party electronic card - allowing users to purchase tickets, trade stocks, on the move and access useful information on the Internet.

"Our customers expect to be able to manage their world on the move, and increasingly that includes the capacity to make secure Web transactions," said Joachim Hoffman, Director of Mobile Commerce Business, Motorola, Europe, Middle East and Africa. "The Motorola Timeport P7389e phone can deliver the e-commerce revolution to the palm of your hand."

The Motorola Timeport P7389e phone incorporates a WAP 1.1 microbrowser to allow fast access to information on the Internet. The iTAP predictive entry feature is ideal for sending text messages; it operates on a one keystroke per letter basis and the software can predict the word you are spelling. This feature is being introduced in Europe with English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

The Motorola Timeport P7389e phone also features an integrated headset and VibraCall discreet to allow the ultimate in discretion; users can receive calls without disturbing meetings as the phone will vibrate rather than ring. The phone also uses Starfish TrueSync technology which helps ensure that any changes made to data on the move can be automatically synchronised with the user`s PC and other devices - which can save time and help keep the phonebook entries on all devices current.

Expected to be available in Q1 2000, the Motorola Timeport P7389e phone weighs 124g with the standard Lithium Ion battery and allows up to 210 minutes of talk time, with a standby time of up to 150 hours.

  • Network and subscription dependent feature. Not available in all areas.
  • Actual performance will be dependent on network configuration, signal strength, function selected, and SIM card. It is also dependent on the combined use of standby/talk time. The use of a SIM card which does not support the Stop Clock feature results in significantly reduced standby time.
  • Designed to synchronise with basic features of the initial release of many popular Personal Information Management (PIM) software and hardware products.
