Mozilla, Opera want VP8 in HTML5

Browser makers Mozilla and Opera have called for the inclusion of Google's open source VP8 codec into the HTML5 specification, writes The Register.

The HTML5 specification doesn't currently specify a video codec, with browser makers free to use any codec. There is a current divide between the patent-backed H.264 and open source Ogg Theora codecs.

"Opera proposed HTML's video element in 2007 and have since worked towards having a common format," says Opera CTO Hakon Wium Lie. "WebM is a great format and we support its inclusion in HTML5."

MeeGo 1.0 released

MeeGo, an open source netbook operating system, has been released as version 1.0, says PC World.

MeeGo is a result of the Intel Moblin and Nokia Maemo projects, designed for mobile computing devices ranging from tablets, pocket-PCs and netbooks.

"With MeeGo, you have the world's largest chip manufacturer and the world's largest mobile handset manufacturer joining forces to create an incredible opportunity for developers who want to reach millions of users with innovative technology," says Jim Zemlin, Linux Foundation executive director.

uTorrent protocol goes open source

The uTorrent Transport Protocol (uTUP) has been released as an open source project, reveals Ars Technica.

uTP, used in the popular uTorrent BitTorrent client, is designed to reduce network congestion by allowing other traffic to take precedence to reduce the overall load that BitTorrent puts on networks.

The protocol code, written in C++, is available on GitHub under the MIT licence.
