MS avails server release candidate

The release candidate for Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 is now available with Microsoft's updated RDP offering, RemoteFX, and memory management capabilities for Hyper-V, writes Search Window Server.

RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory in SP1 are a big deal for Microsoft, as the two features could put the company in better position to compete against rival VMware in the virtual desktop space.

In addition, the Windows 7 SP1 RC also became available on Tuesday.

Emerson cools down server tray

Emerson Network Power introduced a new cooling system that brings refrigerant-based cooling inside the server tray, reports Data Centre Knowledge.

The Liebert XDS server cooling system consists of a standard IT rack equipped with patent-pending cold plate server cooling technology from Emerson's technology partner, Clustered Systems.

The cooling plates are configured to use refrigerant supplied by a Liebert XDP refrigerant pumping unit.

CIOs need more power

According to new research from IT analyst Gartner, chief information officers (CIOs) need to be vested with more decision making power when it comes to issues like server virtualisation and managed hosting, notes One Stop Click.

Gartner believes that CIOs need to do more if they are to ensure the companies they work for remain above water in the wake of the economic downturn.

The organisation claims that 70% of CIOs that business change - particularly infrastructural changes such as the adoption of desktop virtualisation - and entrepreneurship will increase in the next five years.
