Although details of the partnership between local cell operator MTN and software giant Microsoft are still not forthcoming, Microsoft says it will make an announcement outlining details within the next three weeks.
The partnership is expected to bring affordable wireless broadband and PC access to South African consumers.
Jonathan Hatchuel, Microsoft SA`s Windows Client business group manager, says the companies have signed a memorandum of understanding, but further details will not be available for about three weeks.
At a conference in Cape Town eight weeks ago, Microsoft founder and chairman Bill Gates said the companies would work together to provide affordable finance options for consumers purchasing Internet connectivity and an Intel PC running Microsoft Windows Starter Edition.
However, ITWeb has learnt that delays in selecting an appropriate hardware vendor may have caused the project to be set back.
But Hatchuel says: "Since the hardware vendor is to be selected by MTN, we cannot comment on that issue."
MTN has not responded to questions from ITWeb on the issue.
