MS patent to allow eavesdropping
Internet protocol (VOIP) conversations, reports eWeek.
The IT giant has developed technology to secretly intercept, monitor and record communications on VOIP networks. With Skype soon to join the Microsoft family, it's likely the technology will play some kind of a role in the VOIP software going forward.
According to PC Mag, Microsoft rationalised the software patent, called Legal Intercept, as a way to answer to government requests for surveillance and wiretapping.
If awarded, Sophos security advisor Chester Wisniewski says the patent would help Skype overcome resistance from foreign governments insisting on the backdoor. In 2008, Skype admitted to monitoring calls on behalf of the Chinese government.
Fierce VOIP says the VOIP wiretapping issue has been top of mind in recent months as the FBI has been looking for more effective ways of tracking VOIP calls.
The agency reportedly has wanted a capability that could be integrated into new platforms in such a way that it would be easier to use and, presumably, better hidden.
