MS shrugs off gamers' concerns

Johannesburg, 14 Oct 2010

Microsoft has not answered any questions, regarding Xbox Live, posed by the local media and gaming community.

On Tuesday, the software company released pricing details for its long-awaited Xbox Live service, for the Xbox 360. The subscription service enables gamers to play online against players from all over the world, download games and game content, communicate with other users via text and video chat, and update games.

Microsoft set its yearly subscription price at R599, while gamers in other countries enjoy notably lower fees. Similarly, pricing for its MS Points virtual currency was slightly higher than the international norm.

Local gamers, who have been waiting for an official version of the service to arrive for nearly four years, are upset. Microsoft has said it will offer a way for gamers to migrate their unofficial Xbox Live accounts, based in other regions, to the local region.

Gamers argue that the local service will add little value compared to their existing workarounds, while costing nearly 40% more.

As a possible sign of goodwill, Microsoft says it will issue information next week for Xbox specials in the South African region.

Xbox Live for SA launches on 10 November.
