MTC advises clients against spam text messages

Windhoek, Namibia, 11 Jul 2008

Namibian mobile phone users have recently been experiencing an increase in the amount of fake text messages announcing competition winnings. MTC advises clients to be vigilant and avoid falling into the trap.

MTC has noted that many clients are falling prey to some dubious text messages, which in the end costs them money through increased international calls.

Two such text messages doing the rounds at the moment are claimed to originate from Lichtenstein and Kenya, with wording such as "Congratulations, you have won a Toyota" or "Congratulations you have won 10 000 dollars, call 00423663701541".

Albertus Aochamub, GM: Corporate Affairs at MTC, advises clients "to avoid responding to such messages as they are part of an international scam to make money out of unsuspecting individuals".

He further states: "Given the economic realities our people are faced with at the moment, some criminals are unfortunately exploiting the suffering of our people for economic gain. It is still wise to verify the authenticity of such messages with MTC before responding. We are doing our level best to deal with these international syndicates with the assistance of law-enforcement agencies but it takes time."

NPTH is 100% owned by the government of the Republic of Namibia. On 1 September 2006, the sale of 34% of MTC shares to Portugal Telecom (PT) was concluded with the management contract also ceded to PT.
