MTC launches 'Call Me Back' service and says goodbye to missed calls

After extensive trials, MTC Namibia blazes another trail in the arena of service offerings with the launch of a "Call Me Back" service to replace "missed calls".

MTC Namibia will launch a new service on 16 May, named CallMe. It is a USSD-based service whereby customers can send a USSD message which will result in a third party receiving an SMS request to call that person back.

The text string will be: *150* Cell Number # send button.

In announcing the service, MTC's General Manager: Corporate Affairs, explained: "The service is free to MTC customers but will be limited to five free CallMe's per subscriber per day (this is to protect customers from spam). The best part of the product is that - unlike for missed calls - no minimum airtime balance is required and it is free. It will only cost the recipient of the CallMe text message if they act upon the request and return that person's call."

Goodbye missed calls. Hello CallMe!

Request an MTC subscriber to return your call by typing *150*cell no# send. No airtime needed and no charge for the service.

In order to prevent spam, a "blacklisting" service will be available to the MTC contact centre should customers not want to receive these requests. Details will be communicated in due course.

Aochamub concludes: "MTC introduced the mobile revolution to Namibia 13 years ago. We brought mobile Internet, mobile banking, mobile TV and related data and voice services. Now it is time to move the bar again and commit missed calls to the dustbins of history."

MTC (Mobile Telecommunications Limited) was established in 1995 as a joint venture between Namibia Post and Telecommunications Holdings (NPTH), Telia and Swedfund. During May 2004, NPTH concluded a deal that saw it hold 100% of the shares in MTC by acquiring the 49% held by Telia Overseas AB and Swedfund International AB. NPTH is 100% cent owned by the government of the Republic of Namibia. During 2006, the sale of 34% of MTC shares was concluded with Portugal Telecom which also holds the management contract. NPTH retains the balance of 66% of shares on behalf of the Namibian government.
