SA's second cellular operator is increasing its maximum download speed limits for its uncapped Internet offering.
MTN says the move to up the download speed for users of its “Uncapped Lite” packages follows a promotion initiated in October last year.
As from 1 February, “Uncapped Lite” customers will be able to download more, moving from the previous limit of 128kbps to 256kbps, after the 3GB limit is reached. “Uncapped Pro” package users will have a maximum speed limit lift from 128kbps to 384kbps, after the 10GB limit is reached. The current promotion, says MTN, will run until the end of the month.
Chief marketing officer at MTN SA Serame Taukobong says the consumption rate seen with the introduction of the initial promotional package was the impetus for the operator revising its fair usage policy, “permanently increasing its maximum speed limits after the limits have been reached”.
This essentially means high usage customers will be throttled again when the current promotion ends, but at higher speeds than previously. “These products have been designed for uncapped browsing, e-mail and social networking, and customers are not encouraged to continuously download peer-to-peer files,” says Taukobong.
