MTN connects with Dell

Johannesburg, 03 Jul 2001

GSM cellular network operator, MTN South Africa, has announced its selection of Dell Computers as one of its two preferred notebook and desktop suppliers. This strategic partnership is set to enhance MTN`s front-end systems, and thus improve its 24x7 service offering.

"We decided to diversify in terms of hardware suppliers, so as not to put all our eggs in one basket, so to speak. Having two preferred suppliers enables us to secure the latest technology at the flattest rates," says Abdul Ismail, GM IS Delivery at MTN.

Within SA`s competitive cellular industry, "first to market" is a familiar concept. "Dell, like us, understands the importance of being the first to bring a technology to market, giving us that extra edge as business partners," adds Glen Grant-Grierson, IS Management Services Manager at MTN.

MTN`s Nigerian operation has also opted to follow the South African model, by selecting Dell as one of its two preferred suppliers. "It is early days still for our Nigerian operation, but they believe that the dual system we have in place works well and so have followed suit," adds Grant-Grierson. The direct model is an aspect that MTN found especially appealing. "The Dell sales model and Internet-based sales options allows MTN to more effectively manage its procurement process," explains Leigh Hancock, product-marketing manager at Dell SA.

Grant-Grierson says the decision to take Dell on will have long-term implications. "Dell offered MTN a stable technology with a clear growth path. This is valuable to us and we trust that this is the start of a long-term relationship."

Rhys Robinson, MTN account manager at Dell agrees, saying that he believes Dell offers MTN tangible value. "By offering reduced costs, relevant technology and leveraging the direct relationship, we plan on establishing and growing a strategic relationship between Dell and MTN."
