In the latest move in a series of mobile tariff cuts, MTN has announced a 55% drop in its multimedia messaging services (MMS) prices.
MTN and rival Vodacom have announced several price reductions on various services in recent weeks.
In a statement issued yesterday, MTN said it had reduced its MMS prices with effect from 12 September, giving prepaid and postpaid customers access to multimedia messages at a flat rate.
The MMS rate has therefore dropped from R2 to 90c per MMS. The new price includes VAT and applies to MMS messages sent across networks.
"Even though we drastically dropped the price, we have increased the size of the message customers can send at this new flat rate," says Ashraff Paruk, GM of products and innovation at MTN South Africa.
He says this will allow users to send short videos via MMS "at a price that is extremely low by international standards".
MTN says MMS is no longer seen as a premium-rated service, and around one in four of its customers now have MMS-capable handsets.
