MTN Zone customers now get free calls and SMSes for one day every week.

SA's second cellphone operator yesterday announced its new campaign, Mahala Thursdays, which gives customers up to 100% discount on calls and SMSes during both on- and off-peak hours every Thursday, for local MTN-to-MTN calls and SMSes.

MTN SA chief marketing officer, Serame Taukobong, says the company's latest campaign is a “strategic” investment in the prepaid market. “MTN Zone and MTN Muziq customers on prepaid and top-up will essentially enjoy free hours every Thursday.”

He says MTN has observed significant uptake and year-on-year growth with its MTN Zone offering since it was introduced to the South African market in 2007, with over 11 million customers currently using the prepaid plan.

“[MTN] strongly believes that economic empowerment comes through easy and affordable access to communication.”

Taukobong says Mahala Thursdays will benefit the pockets of numerous consumers, from the youth to the entrepreneur.

To join MTN Zone, users can dial *141*4*2#. Moving to MTN Zone is immediate and MTN Zone users can also dial *135# to view currently available discounts in their location.

Taukobong says this offer will run until 22 March, but MTN Zone customers can expect further offers that will translate into savings on communications in the future.

The offer does not include international calls, premium-rated calls, calls, video calls and MMS services.
