With less than two months to go before the 2010 Fifa World Cup opening game at Soccer City, Johannesburg, a new petition aims to enable millions of mobile users to participate in advancing global education, says MTN.
'1Goal: Education for All' is a mobile campaign being run by MTN, in partnership with Fifa, whereby MTN and its partners will collect names and support from the public, footballers, and celebrities to petition all governments to meet their Education for All target by 2015.
According to MTN, this is an international commitment signed by world leaders to provide good quality public education to all children and adults by 2015. The commitment involves prioritising those who are currently missing out on an education, getting them into school, and making sure that once they're in school, they get the chance to learn with qualified teachers.
World leaders are meeting in September for the next UN summit on the Millennium Development Goals, to discuss their ongoing commitments to Education for All. The 1Goal mobile campaign will enable tens of millions of people to let those leaders know that universal education can help end world poverty, says the operator.
Mobile operators will run an international communications campaign to harness public support for 1Goal. The initiative, coordinated by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association, will enable millions of people to sign up via a host of mobile response mechanisms, explains MTN.
1Goal will then deliver the names collected through the campaign to the governments ahead of the UN meeting.
