MTN grows to 9m subscribers

Cellular operator MTN increased its subscriber base by more than one million in the quarter ended 31 December.

By the end of last year MTN had 8.93 million capable subscribers on its networks, versus 7.89 million at the end of the previous quarter. It defines a capable subscriber as one who made or received a call within three months.

The group says this is a 13% increase over the previous quarter and a 33% increase since the financial year-end on 31 March last year.

South Africa recorded a 12.9% increase in subscriber numbers, from 5.36 million (4.26 million prepaid and 1.11 million contract) at the end of September to 6.05 million (4.86 million prepaid and 1.19 million contract) at the end of December.

The international operations, comprising Cameroon, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda and Swaziland, recorded a 13.6% increase in subscribers, from 2.53 million to 2.88 million.

Average revenue per user (ARPU) per month in SA rose from R207 (R103 prepaid and R609 contract) to R208 (R106 prepaid and R606 contract).

ARPU in Cameroon was $24 ($22 in the previous quarter); Nigeria $53 ($55); Rwanda $22 ($24); Uganda $23 ($23); and Swaziland R232 (R209).
