MTN experienced problems with its network on Saturday, which resulted in some users being unable to make calls or send SMSs. Others were left without a signal for a number of hours. The problem affected certain ranges of telephone numbers throughout the country.
Dion Krige, MTN GM of network operations, says the problem occurred as a result of upgrade work, scheduled for the previous evening, which ran into difficulties and could not be completed in time.
"Some of the subscribers` SIM cards were being moved onto a new home location register. However, the technicians encountered some problems and there was congestion on the network which was only resolved by mid-afternoon," he says.
Although the SMS service was not available to certain subscribers in that time, Krige says customers were not supposed to be without a signal.
"Some customers may have experienced difficulty in setting up a voice call on the first attempt and had to redial a number of times before a successful call could be established," he says.
However, some users were left without a signal for up to five hours before the service was restored later on Saturday afternoon.
"MTN`s network is now fully operational and all subscribers are able to connect to the network as normal," he says.
