MTN believes a syndicate is responsible for the recent surge in vandalism and theft at its cellphone tower sites.

MTN has become the victim of extensive vandalism by what the company believes to be a syndicate of criminals.

The operator says it has "recently experienced a surge in vandalism of transformers and siphoning of diesel" at its network tower sites.

Eddie Moyce, chief customer experience officer at MTN, says the perpetrators have broken through fences at various cellphone tower sites and stolen batteries.

Moyce says mast vandalism and the siphoning of fuel could have a "devastating" effect on MTN's network. "[These acts] could cripple our network, leaving customers without access to communications services."

He urges the community to report incidents of theft and vandalism in a bid to support the company in its quest to deliver decent services.
