Northern Cape premier Dipuo Peters will officially launch the R3.5 million MTN Schools Connectivity project at Refentse Primary School in Groenwater Village, Postmasburg, today.
The project is an MTN Foundation initiative that creates multimedia centres in rural and disadvantaged schools throughout the country. The multimedia centres are equipped with 10 computers, a three-in-one printer, scanner and copier machine, a server, a GPRS modem that uses the MTN network for Internet access, a television, video cassette recorder and satellite dish and decoder.
The foundation partners with service providers such as Intel Teach, Deloitte and Touche, Mindset and Microsoft South Africa to provide interactive education materials and software.
To ensure the sustainability of the multimedia centre, MTN also provides each school with a phone shop that will generate income to maintain and upgrade the multimedia centre equipment and provide additional funds for the schools.
Today`s launch sees the project rolling out to 10 Northern Cape schools: Vlugfontein Primary, Hutchinson Primary, Bucklands Primary, Olierivier Marianeiie Primary, Kgothatsano Primary, Schmidtsdrift Batlhaping Primary, Refentse Primary, Ixunkhwesa Combined Primary, Salt Lake Primary and Klein Mier Primary.
MTN has donated over R21 million to the connectivity project, which has established multimedia centres at schools across SA in the past three years.
