MTN push-to-talk soon?

MTN South Africa looks set to introduce a push-to-talk over cellular (POC) for the business market soon.

According to a reliable source, it`s only a matter of time before MTN launches a solution that allows the two-way communication experience across its . The service would initially target the business sector, but it plans to provide a service for consumers soon after.

An MTN spokesperson confirms the company is at an advanced stage of commercial and technical trials and will launch soon. However, he would not disclose further details regarding the service, target audience or date of launch.

Vodacom launched a POC service in December. At the time, the company said the benefits of POC include increased productivity, allowing work groups to collaborate efficiently. It also enhances workflow co-ordination, inter-working between groups and the sharing of critical job information instantly to all group members at the same time, it said.

Earlier this month, Motorola introduced a POC service for prepaid mobile users. The service enables wireless operators to extend POC services to prepaid customers in parallel with postpaid subscribers. The solution encompasses the network, devices and services.
