MTN has cut its off-peak call rates to 95c and peak rates to R2.50 for the duration of the World Cup, which kicked off last week to a spectacular opening between SA and Mexico.

The company says its off-peak rate is the lowest in SA and new rates will apply to customers on MTN Off Peak and MTN Off Peak Topup.

“We want to make communication more affordable in order for our customers to keep in touch with their friends and family during this festival of soccer,” says Serame Taukobong, CMO at MTN SA.

Both of the new rates are charged per second from the first second and the new rates apply to calling any local numbers.

“Existing MTN AnyTime contract customers who feel they would benefit more on the off peak packages can contact their provider to change to an MTN Off Peak or MTN Off Peak TopUp package,” says the company.

Match stats

“There will be various gaming offerings for our customers, including Fifa fantasy predictors, music tracks and wallpapers, as well as core Fifa tournament products such as team and player information and updates. Furthermore, there will be highlights available for download from MTN Play for those fans who want to relive their favourite football moments,” says Taukobong.

MTN says the portal will also give subscribers access to live match updates and an interactive commentary call line, which will provide live match commentary.

“All told, the 2010 Fifa World Cup is going to be an event that will launch SA and Africa into the hearts and minds of the world. All eyes will be on SA in June and July to witness how we will make this the best World Cup yet.”
