SA's second-largest mobile operator, MTN, is trialling long-term evolution (LTE) technology, in Cape Town, which it claims is a first for the city.

“It is the first time that the Mother City has been connected to this new-generation network that MTN is piloting in conjunction with Ericsson,” says MTN in a statement.

The deployment at the International Convention Centre (ICC), in Cape Town, follows a large-scale LTE pilot covering more than 100 sites in Gauteng.

MTN SA CTO Kanagaratnam Lambotharan says the company has received positive feedback since launching its Gauteng trial in July. The company has 'refarmed' some of its 1 800MHz sites in Cape Town.

The LTE network will only be available at the ICC for the duration of AfricaCom, between 9 and 10 November.

MTN expects to commercially roll out this new-generation network nationally within the next two to three years once the regulator allocates the required spectrum.
