Confirming its position as the largest mobile Internet community on earth, MTN`s instant messaging website mtnsms.com notched up its 3 millionth registered subscriber yesterday.
The site, which allows every user to send up to 20 free 160-character long messages per day between their personal computer and cellphones around the world, was launched in August 1999 and is attracting over 11 000 new users every weekday - without spending any money on advertising. Approximately 600 000 messages are sent per day, and 60 million page-views are recorded per month. Indeed, the remarkable growth of the site has vaulted mtnsms.com into the top spot in the South African website rankings, as determined by the Audit Bureau of Internet Standards (ABIS) - outranking long-time leader Africam.
Ross McDonald, CEO of Mobile E @ MTN - the dedicated MTN business unit which developed and manages mtnsms.com - is delighted at the latest milestone. "mtnsms.com continues to exceed our wildest expectations. Net Guide ranked it the 4th most useful site in the world, while hot100.com ranked us among the 50 most popular websites of the world. In Scandinavia, we`re listed among the top ten most visited sites," he says. "And this is just the beginning."
