Multenet releases PocketPAD Power-Over-Ethernet

Johannesburg, 11 May 2006

Multenet, an established global supplier of serial to Ethernet connectivity products, recently announced the release of the PocketPAD Power-Over-Ethernet. The company, a leading innovator in networking technology, has announced the availability of a low-cost serial device server that is IEEE 802.3af compliant.

Phil Blain, the company`s sales and marketing director, says the PocketPAD Power-Over-Ethernet is currently available at its distribution centres.

Based on the entry-level PocketPAD 1 design, the PocketPAD Power-Over-Ethernet comes with one RS232 serial interface and one 10/100 IEEE 802.3af compliant Ethernet interface.

The unit provides a Web-based user interface, designed to easily configure Ethernet and serial parameters. This product is ideal for use when connecting serial devices to an Ethernet network that is supported by 802.3af compliant switches. This kind of installation eliminates the need for an external power supply, as 48V DC is fed to the PocketPAD device server via the network cable. Multenet is also investigating the design of an 802.3af compliant device server that will be capable of feeding power to the serial device. This is ideal for barcode scanner applications, both in the industrial and retail industries.
