Multimillion-rand SARS project wraps up

Johannesburg, 12 Oct 2006

Bytes Technology Group, through its warehousing subsidiary Teradata, is on the verge of completing the deployment of a multimillion-rand IT project at the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

Awarded the contract in January 2004, almost three years of work saw Teradata consolidate from distinct SARS sections into a single system.

"The idea was to consolidate information on their VAT, PAYE, skills development levy, unemployment fund and tax systems," explains Don Roos, senior consultant at Teradata.

Previously, he says, SARS was "unable to get synergy between the ", with duplicate queries having to be issued across all its systems.

Phase two of the project, which began in August 2004, involved integrating customs information to the warehoused database, in what Roos describes as "the implementation of a single logical data model".

SARS can now issue one information request or query and retrieve relevant information from all of its divisions.

Roos was unable to comment on the value of the project, but advised that it ran into millions of rand.
