"Multiple monitors for one user may be a foreign concept to many, but to others it has become a necessity in the workplace. The discussion around multi-monitors is gaining momentum as people are looking for new tools to help them multi-task more effectively and increase productivity and efficiency," exclaims leading IT infrastructure distributor, Axiz's Chris Barnes, Product Manager - HP Monitors.
Many industries view multi-monitors as nothing new; in fact, the likes of traders on the stock exchange, investment bankers, graphic artists and video editors wouldn't be able to operate without several screens.
So why is it still such a foreign concept? Barnes says many companies view multi-monitors as a luxury and not a necessity. "However, the advantages and reduction in environmental footprint all make it an essential investment."
Multi-tasking is a common requirement from employees, but for those that spend a significant amount of their working day in front of a computer screen working on several tasks at once, it is a prerequisite. "Multiple monitors enable users to 'spread out' online data content over several screens, in the same way they would the papers on their desks. This allows them to retain control while generating new content," says Barnes. Having numerous pieces of content and multiple applications open, running and easily accessible avoids losing valuable time going back and forth between documents and programs.
He says HP has introduced a variety of monitors that are Energy Star qualified, in line with minimising environmental impacts by going green. Most of HP's Performance and Advantage Monitors have an EPEAT GOLD rating. The EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) program evaluates computer desktops, laptops, and monitors based on 51 environmental criteria. EPEAT helps companies reduce energy consumption, cut costs, integrate sustainable materials and drive green into every aspect of their operation.
Barnes says companies can ask their employees the following questions below to assess if it would be beneficial to the employees and the organisation to introduce second monitors:
* How much time do I spend switching back and forth between programs?
* How much time do I waste trying to sort through different windows to find the application I need?
* How many typing errors have I made by trying to compare text on two different documents?
* Is one monitor increasing or decreasing my input and output efficiency?
Barnes says the actual cost of purchasing new monitors is more affordable than in the past. "HP recognises the value multiple monitors creates for its clients and has a wide range of products at cost-effective pricing."
