Mustek acquires Pinnacle Micro`s Zimbabwe operation

JSE-listed Mustek Electronics, South Africa`s largest manufacturer and distributor of personal computers and allied products, has acquired the Zimbabwe operation of Pinnacle Micro for an undisclosed sum. It is to use the new acquisition to launch itself into the potentially lucrative Zimbabwean market.

Renamed Mustek Zimbabwe, the new subsidiary is expected to capture some 50% of the Zimbabwean PC market, says Mustek Zimbabwe director Des Seegers, and entrench Mustek`s position as the leading Southern African PC manufacturer and distributor.

"Mustek is acknowledged as having the largest share of the PC market in South Africa," says Seegers. "We would expect the Zimbabwean market to parallel and exceed this success, based on Mustek`s range of product offerings and quality of infrastructure and systems. These are superior to anything to be found in the Zimbabwe market."

Mustek Zimbabwe will be headed up by Gavin Bryant, a leading figure in the success of Pinnacle in becoming one of South Africa`s leading distributors of locally assembled and branded PCs.

The acquisition of Pinnacle Zimbabwe is subject to a two-year profit-based earnout, which Seegers expects will be met with ease, based on the number of international brands in the Mustek stable, including Mecer, Compaq, Intel, Epson, Fujitsu, Microsoft and Accton. Seegers adds that Mustek Zimbabwe may be used as a springboard to enter other African territories over time.
