After a thorough commercial process over the past six months, Mustek has been awarded the Eskom contract for the exclusive supply of Mecer desktop and notebook PCs. Mecer, the brand supplied by Mustek, performed in line with international brands carrying a Gartner Group Tier One rating - a rating previously only awarded to international brands.
Mustek Limited CEO David Kan commented, "We are delighted, and feel that given a fair opportunity, we can compete with any other brand on the market."
The goal of Eskom`s desktop strategy is to reduce the total cost of ownership of the desktop infrastructure and increase the return derived from the investment. Important elements of this are standardisation and the proper management of the configuration and the supply and support logistics. Eskom was looking for a PC solution that provides stable, well-configured products at a good price. Mecer was able to provide this.
Eskom was also looking for a strategic partnership with a manufacturer that would enable solid ongoing product configuration management, effective ongoing supply and support logistics on a national basis, commitment to continuous improvement shared risk, and an ability to further its policy of black economic empowerment.
Mustek met the criteria outlined above. The contract is viewed as a milestone in South African business, as it is the first time that a local brand has effectively competed with international brands on an equal basis. Mustek acts as the "prime contractor" and furthers the economic empowerment of black people.
