MWeb has unveiled a cloud-based storage service for its users, called Store-It, which the Internet service provider claims is a South African first.

“Many consumers aren't aware that they use cloud services daily,” says Nathier Kasu, head of at MWeb.

Kasu explains that the recent announcement by Apple about iCloud, at its World Wide Developer Conference, has thrown the spotlight onto cloud computing, but Internet users still are not knowledgeable about the buzz word.

MWeb says it has taken into consideration the 1GB free storage offered by Drop Box, and has opted to give customers 5GB free storage space.

“This will allow users to securely store documents such as their wills, copies of their identification documents, as well as almost 100 000 photographs or more than 1 200 MP3s,” says Kasu.

“All is stored locally, allowing faster and more efficient retrieval times than offshore-based solutions.”

The stored in Store-It can be accessed from any connected device, and does not require additional software.

“The Store-It product will allow users to be protected from a hard-drive meltdown and have complete control of their data which is stored locally on MWeb's servers,” says the company.

The 5GB Store-It product will be offered free to MWeb's customers with the 45GB and 95GB upgrade options retailing at R70 and R140, respectively.
