N-Med selects Compaq in R1,7 million deal

Johannesburg, 16 Mar 1999

N-Med, a company that was formed last year to provide essential IT business application services to doctors, private clinics, hospitals and pharmacies around the country, has invested R1,7 million in Compaq hardware.

The hardware comprises four ProLiant 6500 rack-mounted servers configured in a cluster environment providing fail safe computing for N-Med`s mission critical applications.

According to Keith White, IT director at N-Med, the cluster solution is the first of its kind in Gauteng.

"We will be using the Compaq systems to provide a range of services that address the life style of practitioners and, using Internet technologies, will communicate these services to them."

These include access to medical information meeting the Minister of Health, Dr Zuma`s concept of being permanently up to date in matter relating to medical issues. The information which is approved by the South African Bureau of Standards, is entered onto a database by six medical practitioners.

"We are currently in the process of building our own shopping mall and business park theme making extensive use of web technologies to make the life of the practitioners who use our systems as accessible as possible," says White.

The Compaq cluster farm includes a fibre disk array with built in redundancy ensuring data protection for the mission critical applications.

N-Med encourages practitioners to use Compaq hardware at their practices as the hardware of choice as the platform is the most "hassle free".

"Our business philosophy is to enter into a rental contract with doctors to provide them with their equipment in a maintenance agreement," adds White.
