Nampower goes for Dimension Data videoconferencing solution

Johannesburg, 26 Sep 2000

NamPower, Namibia`s electricity utility, is implementing a videoconferencing (VC) solution from Dimension for improved communication between far-flung regional and national hubs.

The videoconferencing facility, to be housed in NamPower`s high-tech convention centre, will be rented out to the business community in Windhoek, thus generating a greater return on investment for NamPower.

This latest project is the second major audiovisual communication implementation in Namibia this quarter for Dimension Data Interactive Media.

"In a competitive and constantly changing environment, NamPower - through video-conferencing - expects to reduce travel expenses due to decreased travel," says Lois Coghill, engineering assistant at NamPower. "In addition, we will be able to hold more regular inter-regional meetings, improving internal communications, as videoconferencing bridges the vast distances between offices," he says.

Dimension Data Interactive Media has implemented a PictureTel group videoconferencing system, with peripheral applications such as data exchange facilities, at NamPower`s head office in Windhoek. This VC system is located in a newly built videoconferencing room, augmenting NamPower`s new convention facilities.

The utility giant is also considering implementing videoconferencing systems at its regional offices.

"After extensive in-house investigations, NamPower found the world-class PictureTel system to best suit the company`s needs," says Coghill.

Dimension Data Interactive Media is rapidly establishing itself in Namibia, having already cornered the South African videoconferencing market.

While NamPower is expected to soon realise the advantages of videoconferencing, the University of Namibia - Interactive Media`s first VC site - has already reaped numerous benefits from its VC implementation.
