The Amass system, developed by the Advanced Digital Information Corporation (ADIC) and distributed in South Africa by Supported Software, enables traditional archiving media to be used as shared storage devices from anywhere in the network. This means automated tape or optical libraries can be used at near-disk speed, reducing storage costs.
According to Fred Daniels, Naspers` assistant GM for Information Services, the Amass software is being used with a 5.5TB AML/S robot on a Sun server. "The Amass system provided a mass storage medium for text and photo archives which could be accessed by different business units within Naspers," says Daniels.
The system will be used to store photographic material, as well as archive complete magazines, advertising artwork, commonly used data and less used unstructured data.
