Global provider of location-based platforms Navteq has signed a sponsorship agreement with telco Telef'onica for next month's Navteq Global LBS Challenge.

The competition targets application developers around the world, challenging them to design innovative mobile applications using positioning technology and Navteq maps.

“The possibility for developers to get support from a mobile operator to launch their location- applications to a large subscriber base is crucial for their go-to-market efforts,” says Marc Naddell, vice-president of Navteq partner and developer programmes.

Recruiting talent

Winners are chosen by a panel of judges from five regions, namely Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA); North America; South America; Asia-Pacific; and India.

Over $10 million in prize money is shared among the overall winners. Final judging for the EMEA region will take place in Barcelona, Spain on 14 February.

Telef'onica will give the winners access to technical resources and commercial support through its Movilforum Partner Programme. This will be the third consecutive year that the Spanish mobile operator is sponsoring the competition.

Garz'on Herrero, head of innovation at Telef'onica, says: “By sponsoring the Global LBS Challenge, Telef'onica aims to reach, capture and recruit the best LBS applications and talent from all over the world for its customers and invest in new business.”
