NCR Corporation, the world`s leading supplier of automated teller machines (ATMs) delivered a total of 44,024 ATMs to customers worldwide in 1999, positioning the company as the world`s leading ATM supplier for the 13th consecutive year. NCR is represented here in South Africa by National Data Systems (NDS), a member of the JSE-listed Fintech Group of companies.
"Our annual survey will show NCR`s continuing worldwide strength and a significant lead on its nearest competitor," said David Robertson, president of industry authority, The Nilson Report, based in Oxnard, California.
NCR saw especially strong shipment growth in Europe, with full function and cash dispenser ATMs showing 13% and 21% increases respectively over 1998. In the Asia Pacific region, NCR experienced a 28% increase in total ATM shipments.
"This continued worldwide leadership position speaks to the long-standing confidence that customers have in NCR`s self-service solutions," said Jack Horton, Managing Director, NDS.
"ATMs are a vital cornerstone of NCR`s strategy of delivering Relationship Technology solutions for the global financial industry," he continued.
One of the factors NCR cited for its shipment increases in these regions was the growing penetration of off-premise ATMs - those machines that are not located in the traditional banking branch. In addition, banks are requesting more functionality in ATMs as well as increased flexibility.
"The replacement of older ATMs in order to meet demand for increasingly sophisticated services and convenience will continue to fuel growth for NCR," continued Horton.
"We are also seeing strong revenue from services and expect greater demand for self-service outsourcing. NCR will continue to build upon its leadership in the year 2000 and beyond."
