The Nedcor group, consisting of Nedbank, Permanent and Peoples` Bank, has announced that it will sell airtime to MTN prepaid users from its of automatic teller machines (ATMs) from this month.

Current MTN Call-a-Lot and Receive-a-Lot will be able to purchase airtime from any of the 900 terminals using any Saswitch ATM card.

Edward Wicks, who is responsible for MTN`s product development, says customers will not need to enter a voucher number into their handsets. When the transaction is processed the chosen bank account will be debited and airtime will automatically be loaded onto the prepaid account.

First National Bank started sales of Vodacom airtime through its non-cash service terminals in October last year. Vodago vouchers are sold at nearly 50 of these terminals nationwide. Voucher numbers, printed when the transaction has been processed, must be entered into the handset.

The Nedcor service is to be active in the Gauteng region before the end of May and will be rolled out nationally during June and July.

Meanwhile, American banks, while apparently not providing similar services, are gearing their ATM networks up to become multimedia kiosks. Associated Press reports that Wells Fargo has rolled out cash machines which show movie previews and news headlines while transactions are being processed. The bank plans to have 800 such machines operating throughout America by the end of the year.
