The Nepad e-Africa Commission, the Department of Communications and the Presidential National Commission have convened a meeting of young "e-cadres" to establish the Nepad Youth ICT Programme.

The meeting, being held in Johannesburg today and tomorrow, aims to create a platform to allow Africa`s youth to play a role in the continent`s development through ICT.

This meeting was agreed upon at the Nepad meeting held last year in Limpopo. It was decided an annual Nepad youth conference should be held to review information society and youth development issues.

"Two young people, one female, one male from various countries across Africa, will participate in this meeting," says Nepad e-Africa Commission communications manager Samuel Mikenga.

Respective country governments represented on the Nepad Heads of States and Government Implementation Committee select the participants, he says.

"The Nepad Youth ICT Programme is intended to build a cadre of young people who will raise on issues of the information society and serve as active participants in building an inclusive information society in their countries.

"The Nepad e-Africa Commission has been involved in various activities, including infrastructure projects and e-schools. However, a gap was noticed on the involvement of youth in information society development," Mikenga says.

The meeting will result in Nepad ICT Youth Programme structures, roles, terms of reference and rules of procedure as well as set up an official date for the launch, he says.
