Network Appliance, Inc today announced the general availability of NetApp SnapManager 2.0 for SQL Server, a near-instantaneous backup and recovery solution supporting Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (see related release at www.netapp.com/news/press/news_rel_20050607).
Today`s news builds on the existing NetApp and Microsoft relationship - this time in support of the release of the Microsoft flagship SQL Server 2005.
NetApp SnapManager 2.0 for SQL Server, which supports both NetApp Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI-based IP SAN solutions, is available to customers who need to dramatically reduce the administrative overhead of database backups, provide instant recovery for databases of any size, and automate the process of migrating SQL Server 2005 databases.
"Microsoft recognises NetApp as a proven leader in storage innovation - especially in the data management and protection market. We are pleased that NetApp is releasing its reliable and efficient backup and recovery solution based on Snapshot technology in support for SQL Server 2005," said Mike Tuchen, general manager of SQL Server at Microsoft Corp.
"Backing up, recovering and accessing data from a SQL Server 2005 database quickly and reliably are crucial for our customers. The NetApp backup and recovery solution helps customers simplify the data management of their SQL Server 2005."
"First American Trust is a federal savings bank in Orange County, California, with over US $600 million in deposits. Our ability to quickly, efficiently and reliably backup and restore our banking and wealth management data from our SQL Server databases is a necessity, enabling more reliable systems, which translates to a better bottom line," said Henry Jenkins, chief technology officer at First American Trust.
"For almost 10 years we have relied on NetApp to store and mirror all of our critical user and application data and are intimately familiar with the NetApp approach to simplifying the management of complex data centre environments. We are confident that SnapManager 2.0 for SQL Server brings an even more tightly integrated, unique and powerful backup and recovery solution to customers using NetApp storage."
SnapManager 2.0 for SQL Server, when used with other powerful NetApp data management solutions, helps customers reduce costs, simplify data management, and increase data availability for SQL Server environments with no impact to performance. Benefits include:
* Reduced costs. NetApp helps consolidate SQL Server data and maximise storage resource utilisation with its unique FlexVol technology, available through NetApp Data ONTAP 7G software.
* Simplified data management. NetApp attacks the storage management challenge with automated data management, rapid storage provisioning, and the ability to backup and restore hundreds of databases residing on a single SQL Server installation.
* Maximised data availability. NetApp provides near-instantaneous backups, rapid database recovery, and the ability to store multiple online clones of SQL Server databases with minimal capacity overhead. In addition, NetApp SnapMirror software provides simple, flexible and cost-effective replication and mirroring.
"Customers shouldn`t spend a majority of their time focused on managing their storage resources and how they`re integrating with their business applications in database environments. Their expertise and energy should be focused on supporting their overall IT infrastructure and meeting business needs as demands shift," said Patrick Rogers, vice-president of Products and Partners at Network Appliance.
"The beauty of SnapManager 2.0 for SQL Server is that NetApp reliably, securely and cost-effectively simplifies what is typically a highly complex process without impacting the performance of the production database. We are excited to be working closely with Microsoft and that SQL Server 2005 customers now have an enhanced backup and recovery solution to further simplify data management in SQL Server 2005 database environments."
NetApp SnapManager 2.0 for SQL Server supports Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) for high availability and Microsoft Multipath I/O for resiliency in FC and IP SAN environments. NetApp hardware solutions are listed in the Windows Server Catalogue, which demonstrates their compatibility with Microsoft products.
