Johannesburg, 11 May 1998

Venture Computer, the sole distributor in South Africa for Lexmark International, today announced three new Optra S models in this award winning family of laser printers. This range of laser printers has won the majority of the relevant awards that have been on offer since they were introduced in the middle of 1997, and most recently walked away with the top ratings from VARBusiness magazine. These new laser printers, the 2455/n, 1855/n,and 1255/n, replace the 2450/n, 1650/n, and 1250/n models, offer true 1200 x 1200 dpi & 1200 x 1200 Image Quality in all datastreams, and as with all the Optra S models, deliver outstanding throughput, print quality, flexibility, printing management and high-capacity, environmental-friendly consumables. "If you are looking for an overall value for your money, and are looking at things like price, speed and maximum paper handling flexibility, Lexmark continues to be in a leadership position," said Richard Fearon, director of sales and marketing at Venture Computer. "Lexmark is a safe buy because your investment is protected, they offer the service and support you expect and you are able to count on them to deliver products with leading technology." With this announcement, once again Lexmark proves it listens to its customers` business needs and responds with innovative printing solutions at an extraordinary value. "We`re proud to be able to expand the Optra S family with these new models," continued Richard Fearon. "I`m especially pleased that Lexmark`s flexibility and responsiveness allows us to deliver unprecedented value for our customers. This announcement reaffirms Lexmark`s position as the industry leader for network printing solutions by strengthening the award-winning Optra S product line. Already, the S1855n has won the latest PC Magazine (May 26th edition) Editors Choice award". Amongst the many new and enhanced features of these new models are faster processors (133Mhz RISC in the 1855 and 2455), increased performance, lower time to first page (10sec for the 1855), 10/100BaseTX Ethernet MarkNet S adapters as standard, increased paper input/output, more productivity, reduced cost of ownership, and "Digital" office ready. Additionally, other new features include receive-only fax capability via the serial interface; an innovative TIFF SIMM for printing image formats files directly; the OptraImage solution for easy and convenient copying; and numerous enhancements to the MarkVision software. As with all the Optra S models, these new models will work in all major network operating environments and include both PostScript Level 2 and PCL 6 emulations for compatibility with virtually all application software. Unmatched paper handling versatility, the Lexmark Optra S family has the most versatile set of paper handling options in the industry. Modular input options can be added to all of the family members. Options include a duplexer, an 85-envelope feeder and 250-sheet, 500-sheet and 2000-sheet drawers. Up to three stackable 650 sheet output expanders can be added to the 18 ppm and 24 ppm models. All family members share the same optional memory, flash memory, hard drive, MarkNet network adapters, TIFF SIMM, OptraImage solutions and choice of toner cartridges with 7500 page or industry-leading 17600 page capacities. Value-priced bundles of popular paper handling combinations are available as well. With the unique modularity and variety of configuration choices, customers are able to build the printer that best fits their printing needs today and tomorrow. To help reduce support costs, the Lexmark Optra printers ship with MarkVision, Lexmark`s powerful printer management utility. In addition to popular features such as remote set-up, status and problem diagnosis, MarkVision offers valuable features like job statistics and printer inventory, toner and paper level "gas gauges." MarkVision can even send an alert for conditions such as toner or paper low and output bin nearly full, helping prevent problems before they happen. All of these features improve network administrator productivity, ultimately reducing help desk costs. Additionally, newly announced features include the ability of tracking money-saving actions such as multi-up printing for handouts; convenience features for managing multiple printers from a single workstation; the capability of setting up and configuring of internal and external print servers through an Internet browser; and the configuring directly of external print servers from the operators panel of the new Optra S printers. Finally, the OptraImage solution provides customers with an easy, convenient colour or mono-chrome digital-quality copying capability for Optra S or SC network laser printers. The OptraImage copying solution has popular workgroup copier features at personal copier prices, including an automatic document feeder, duplexing capability, a user-friendly key pad, reduction and enlargement from 50 to 200 per cent and broad media support including transparencies. When coupled with the1275 SC, customers gain a very affordable solution for fast, high-quality colour copies. The OptraImage copying solution offers a choice of two scanning units, a monochrome scanner with a 30-sheet automatic document feeder that scans up to 24 ppm and a colour scanner with a 50-sheet automatic document feeder that scans up to 15 ppm. Both solutions include an intuitive operator key pad that makes it easy for customers to take advantage of money-saving features like duplexing and handouts of multiple pages printed on a single page. "The new OptraImage copying solution offers our customers a variety of choices for convenient workgroup and personal copying when coupled with Optra S or Optra SC printers," added Richard Fearon.
