Cabinet has approved a replacement for the director-general at the Department of Home Affairs.

Apleni will take up the challenging task of turning the department around, something his predecessor failed to complete.

Msimang assumed the role of DG in May 2007, after leaving the troubled State IT Agency, and was expected to turn the department around.

However, his tenure was marked by the controversial multibillion-rand “Who Am I Online” project, which was delayed several times and subjected to a forensic audit.

Two years after the implementation of an ambitious turnaround that started in 2007, Home Affairs minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma criticised the levels of corruption in the department and the slow pace of transformation.
