New diploma in e-commerce applications development

By Faculty Training Institute
Johannesburg, 10 Jul 2003

There is a growing and obvious need for e-commerce and application development skills. Faculty Training Institute is right there, offering its diploma in e-commerce applications development. This diploma course follows the huge market success that the company has enjoyed with its diplomas in project management and business analysis and e-commerce technologies.

"In order for organisations to compete in the new economy, it is necessary that their employees have the necessary skills," said Caron Perkins, course convener of Faculty Training Institute. "We are very enthusiastic about the launch of our diploma in e-commerce applications development which will provide the student with best development practices in e-commerce."

This course is valuable for those involved in or intending to develop applications for the Web and e-commerce, including application developers, database analysts, designers and project managers. It is developed with a good combination of theory, hands-on and project-based work where specific combinations of technologies that provide complete development solutions are covered.

The diploma addresses the subject of e-commerce holistically and provides the student with an end-to-end exposure and view of the development technologies and architectures that are needed to implement an e-commerce site successfully.

This spectrum of architectures and technologies start at the client-side (browser) where HTML, Javascript, cascading style sheets and DHTML are learned and applied. The course then moves on to the server-side. Here, the student learns to develop a shopping cart implementation plus learns how to integrate a database into the Web site. Web databases have become an essential part of dynamic Web sites. This course focuses on the concepts and skills required to build a database-driven Web site and database-enabled applications using Active Server Pages (ASP). Finally, the student touches on the benefits of using XML in transferring information effectively between business systems.

Tools and techniques of some of the most modern methods of development are taught. E-commerce applications development theories and techniques and the hands-on practical knowledge form the basis of the diploma. The diploma is very practical in nature, where each student develops an entire e-commerce Web site as the final deliverable of the course.

The benefits of this diploma course are that it provides the student with knowledge and understanding of e-commerce and related applications. Being a practical course, delegates will also be able to embark into the new and lucrative Web development and e-commerce applications development area of IT.
