Digital has announced open enterprise-class storage solutions ideally suited for data warehousing, Year 2000, Internet-based computing, video imaging and other storage-intensive, mission-critical applications. The new StorageWorks solutions offer double the performance and higher capacity than traditional SCSI solutions at virtually the same price. They also offer the easiest migration path to next-generation fibre channel storage solutions in the industry. The announcement includes: Four new storage subsystems: * the Enterprise Storage Array (ESA) 10000 high-end solution, * the RAID Array 7000 departmental system, * the RAID Array 3000 subsystem (recommended for Windows NT environments), and * the RAID Array 230/Plus solution; new storage management software and Two-, four-, and nine-gigabyte UltraSCSI disk drives. "Today, customers in virtually every industry want larger amounts of faster storage for mission-critical applications," said Nicole Caetano, channel marketing specialist at Digital SA. "UltraSCSI, invented by Digital and now an industry standard, is the technology of choice for the foreseeable future because it`s stable; it provides a significant, yet affordable performance boost; and it offers robust data storage with performance comparable to Digital's upcoming fibre channel products. In addition, our UltraSCSI solutions enable customers to move to fibre channel in the future, without having to replace their entire storage architecture." Higher-Performance RAID Solutions for the Entire Enterprise based on a building-block approach in which disks, controllers and power supplies plug together, the StorageWorks architecture offers customers a simple and cost-effective method for deploying the new UltraSCSI solutions across an enterprise. These solutions support all levels of RAID and provide high availability for mission-critical data. Customers will be able to upgrade to fibre channel ensuring investment protection. The ESA 10000 offers from 200 gigabytes to multiple terabytes of capacity for high-performance applications that require the largest amounts of storage. It comprises two base modules. One is optimised for mail and messaging and Year 2000 applications, and transaction-based applications such as those from Baan, Peoplesoft and SAP. The other module is designed for higher-bandwidth applications such as decision support, data mining, data warehousing, online analytical processing (OLAP), and the Internet. The RAID Array 7000 departmental system enables users to cost-effectively add storage capacity up to 655 gigabytes, while the RAID Array 3000 is especially well suited for use with Microsoft`s Windows NT server configurations. Its subsystem provides high availability for environments requiring 128 gigabytes or less of storage. The RAID Array 230/Plus is the most cost-effective StorageWorks UltraSCSI RAID solution and is ideal for customers who want to incorporate a higher-performance, higher-capacity RAID solution into their environment, but don`t require failover or clustering. The new StorageWorks UltraSCSI solutions will support Digital UNIX, OpenVMS, Windows NT (x86- and Alpha-based systems), Sun Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, Novel NetWare and SGI Irix operating systems. The StorageWorks Command Console software delivers an easy and efficient method for monitoring, configuring, and troubleshooting StorageWorks RAID Array subsystems simultaneously, across multiple platforms, anywhere in an enterprise. StorageWorks UltraSCSI wide disks are high-speed (exceeding transfer rates of standard SCSI), 7200 RPM drives offered in two-, four-, and nine-gigabyte capacities for maximum configuration flexibility. Based on magneto-resistive (MR) technology, the new drives are available in Digital`s StorageWorks system building blocks.
