New iPAQs offer something for all users

Johannesburg, 08 Nov 2004

Tarsus Technologies has announced the availability of several new iPAQ PDAs (personal digital assistants) in the HP stable.

These devices have been designed to take advantage of new functionality brought to the table by Microsoft`s Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PCs operating system and elevate user experience to a new level.

The new models offer business users a wealth of new functionality, along with increased multimedia capabilities, factors that are indicative of the fact that the availability of information and portability are becoming a greater priority.

"PDAs are beginning to emerge as essential devices for users that need to carry their digital media with them, while keeping up to date with their personal information and documents," says Andre Wollheim, HP product manager at Tarsus Technologies.

"The iPAQ RZ1700 is the perfect `value` device in HP`s new range of handhelds, offering users the ability to stay productive with access to e-mail and calendaring information, while enjoying digital media music, digital video and picture viewing from a convenient `carry anywhere` device," Wollheim continues.

From an expandability perspective, the RZ1700 features a SD Expansion slot, which can be used for adding additional storage, networking devices (such as Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless LAN cards) and peripherals like GPS (global positioning satellite) cards, GPRS (cellular voice and data telephony) cards and digital camera add-ons.

"Next in the line-up, the iPAQ RX3700 features built-in wireless capabilities in the form of 802.11b and Bluetooth, two sets of functionality that are fast becoming must-haves for executives that spend a reasonable amount of time out of the office," Wollheim says.

"It is also HP`s first handheld to feature a built-in digital camera, which offers a resolution of 1.2 Megapixels and 4 x digital zoom, more than sufficient for taking pictures destined for the Web or e-mail. To this end, the RX3700 offers users 152MB of available internal storage and the ability to add additional storage and peripherals through an SD Expansion card slot."

Like the RZ1700, the RX3700 comes with Microsoft`s new Pocket PC software and numerous applications from HP which facilitate picture management, touch-up and transfer.

"Moving onto a unit designed for business professionals, HP`s new iPAQ HX4700 signifies a departure from conventional handheld design and is more of an ultra portable notebook in terms of its functionality, than it is a PDA," Wollheim opinions.

"With full VGA resolution (480 x 640 pixels) and an integrated touch-pad for navigation, the HX4700 is a little bigger than conventional PDAs, but more than makes up for the additional size in the functionality department," Wollheim says.

The HX4700 affords users an available storage volume of 135MB and the capability for both storage and functionality expansion through both an SD Expansion card slot and CompactFlash II slot.

"Hardware aside, the applications bundled by HP with the HX4700 ensures that users can take full advantage of the Bluetooth interface for connectivity and printing, enhanced security to keep sensitive information safe from harm, and manage their documents, pictures and digital media with ease."

"Overall, the new PDA line-up from HP offers something for every scale of user. With a broader range of offerings and more specific functionality, HP has reaffirmed its position as a market leader and the new range will most likely drive adoption of PDAs to users that would never have considered handheld devices before now," Wollheim concludes.
